Description
Course notes will be emailed to you prior to the class.
Suggested Supplies:
Pencil, Graph Paper, Ruler, Eraser
Tracing Paper or a Light Pad can be helpful
Your favourite Black Ink and a variety of pen nibs in a straight holder. I will be using McCaffery Black. You will need a waterproof ink if you want to add colour with watercolour. Walnut ink gives beautiful results but cannot be combined with watercolour.
Nib Suggestions: You can try your favourite broad edge nib, split nibs or flexible pointed pen nibs. Mitchell 6 is my favourite broad edge nib. A flexible pointed pen nib such as a Hunt 101 or Leonardt EF Principal is suggested if you want to use script lettering.Lettering is not the focus of this class, but I will provide some ornamental broad edge and script exemplars in your course notes.
Suitable Paper Choices:
Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Smooth Paper. This very smooth paper is helpful for the ornamental pen strokes. You will need a few sheets for practice, The 9×12 size pad is a good choice.
If you want to try a dark or festive coloured cardstock, you can achieve beautiful effects with Dr. Ph Martin’s Bleed proof White.
Most of these designs were historically created in Black and White. But you can try adding colour or working with Payne’s Grey Watercolour as your ink.
Optional Embellishments can be added with touches of gold leaf, coloured pencil or watercolour.
Optional Gilding Supplies: I use Miniatum Ink, 23k Gold Leaf and a Size 0 Taper Point Extra Firm Clay Shaper tool
