Abundant Joy Study Day

Saturday November 8th, 2025 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM ET

A Festive Study Day is waiting for you on November 8th, 2025. Some of the most opulent forms of both offhand and designed flourishes are Title Flourishes. These designs can be carefully constructed with pencil before being flourished in ink or they can be created with elements of true offhand flourishing.  Title Flourishes are meant as “call outs” on a calligraphic piece or are used as emphasis of a special word, name or title. When studied as their own flourished structures, they make gorgeous stand-alone designs. We will immerse ourselves in historic examples from the 1700’s to the mid 1900’s as we learn the intricacies of these designs. These ornate flourishes work well with a broad edge hand, but a heavy pointed pen script will also work.  Study days are meant to build skills, and the student is encouraged to work along with me on a unique Title Flourish during the session rather than observing and taking notes. The Study Day Experience is meant to fill a much-needed gap in online teaching where each of us can truly grow as artists and genuinely build intuitive study skills. The Study Day will be presented through Zoom, and a recording will be available for 6 months following the session. While attendance in the Zoom session is encouraged, you can also work along with the recording if the time zone is not suitable for you. A lunch break is given during the session, and the pace of this class is relaxed. These are peaceful and encouraging sessions. All skill levels are welcome. Registration is $80 US. Please allow 2-3 days for us to process your registration. Once you are registered, you will receive a confirmation with a complete supply list, Zoom link and a location for our online Padlet where we can share the images of our work and ask questions. A set of notes will be available the first week of November and sent out to each student. It will be my pleasure to accompany you on this beautiful study journey these ornate flourishes to our skill set.  These flourishes are filled with Abundant Joy and are a delight to explore!

Course notes will be emailed to you prior to the class.

Suggested Supplies:

Pencil, Graph Paper, Ruler, Eraser

Tracing Paper or a Light Pad can be helpful

Your favourite Black Ink and a variety of pen nibs in a straight holder.  I will be using McCaffery Black. You will need a waterproof ink if you want to add colour with watercolour. Walnut ink gives beautiful results but cannot be combined with watercolour.

Nib Suggestions: You can try your favourite broad edge nib, split nibs or flexible pointed pen nibs. Mitchell 6 is my favourite broad edge nib. A flexible pointed pen nib such as a Hunt 101 or Leonardt EF Principal is suggested if you want to use script lettering.Lettering is not the focus of this class, but I will provide some ornamental broad edge and script exemplars in your course notes.

Suitable Paper Choices:

Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Smooth Paper. This very smooth paper is helpful for the ornamental pen strokes. You will need a few sheets for practice, The 9×12 size pad is a good choice.

If you want to try a dark or festive coloured cardstock, you can achieve beautiful effects with Dr. Ph Martin’s Bleed proof White.

Most of these designs were historically created in Black and White. But you can try adding colour or working with Payne’s Grey Watercolour as your ink.

Optional Embellishments can be added with touches of gold leaf, coloured pencil or watercolour.

Optional Gilding Supplies: I use Miniatum Ink, 23k Gold Leaf and a Size 0 Taper Point Extra Firm Clay Shaper tool
